Eim Khao Mun Kai is a cozy Thai restaurant nestled in the heart of Elmhurst, NY, specializing in an exquisite rendition of Hainanese chicken rice, a beloved Thai street food delicacy. This spot is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic, well-executed Thai comfort food with a focus on quality and simplicity. At 81-32 Broadway, they deliver a memorable culinary experience centered around their star dish: steamed chicken over rice, also available roasted or crispy, served in portion sizes perfect for solo diners or groups.
The moment you dig into their signature Steamed Chicken over Rice, you’ll notice how tender, perfectly poached chicken rests atop fragrant, lightly seasoned steamed rice. The richness of the chicken broth infuses the rice with a delicate yet deeply comforting flavor. The menu’s highlight, the ginger scallion sauce, is an aromatic powerhouse—bright, with a gentle heat that instantly elevates the dish. For those who love a bit of spice and complexity, their chili sauce mixed with raw garlic adds a fiery kick that lingers in the best way.
For those wanting variety, Eim Khao Mun Kai offers expertly roasted chicken that crackles with smoky, crisp skin, and their crispy chicken sets offer a satisfying crunch that contrasts beautifully with the softness of the rice. Fans rave about the generous combo sets, which include chicken liver and gizzards—delicacies that speak to the authenticity and depth of the menu. The availability of extras like soup with daikon or ginger sauce provides a complete, nourishing meal.
Drinks at Eim Khao Mun Kai complement the food wonderfully, with Thai tea and Thai iced coffee serving as sweet, aromatic palates cleansers. Their lychee Thai iced tea offers a refreshing floral twist, while traditional root beer rounds out the beverage selection with an all-American touch.
The ambiance here is an intimate, no-frills setup—leaning more toward a grab-and-go style rather than leisurely dining. It’s perfect for those seeking a quick, satisfying meal packed with authentic flavors without the fuss. Reviewers consistently highlight the clean, well-prepared food and the fair pricing, painting a picture of reliability and genuine culinary passion. A few have noted the limited space, especially for larger groups, but for one to three diners, it’s a warm, welcoming enclave offering one of the best takes on Hainanese chicken rice in the city.
What truly sets Eim Khao Mun Kai apart is the laser focus on a single culinary tradition done exceptionally well. It’s a hidden gem that combines freshness, authenticity, and simplicity into a dish that is both nostalgic and exciting—a perfect reflection of traditional Thai comfort food in an unpretentious setting. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned fan, the balance of savory chicken, fragrant rice, and that irresistible ginger scallion sauce will keep you coming back for more.
Simple, satisfying meal. The menu focuses on one main food item - Thai style Hainanese chicken rice(khao man gai), offered in three portion sizes, along with a nice selection of drinks. I went with the Thai green tea, which paired well with the meal. They offer a variety of sauces so you can mix to your own preference (we combined the soybean paste with the ginger-scallion sauce). The broth that comes with the dish complements it perfectly.
Probably one of the best Hainan chicken and chicken rice I’ve had in the U.S. The ginger scallion sauce is a must, and if you can handle some heat, definitely try the chili sauce—especially when mixed with raw garlic! The place is small and cramped, so don’t expect to fit comfortably if you’re in a group larger than three.
The food is fresh, clean, and delicious! I’m usually nervous about finding hair or dirt in meals, but here everything well-prepared. The flavors are clean, the combos are satisfying, and the prices are really fair !
Amazing hole in the wall restaurant / grab and go spot. They even sell sticky rice to go. Wide range of foods I’d never seen at very reasonable prices. No seating, cash or zelle payment.
A hidden gem of Elmhurst, only popped in because a certain place had a 45min wait. One of the better Hiananese Chicken Rice places I've been, and if taking into account price to taste/quality ratio I'd have to give this place 5 stars. Recommend getting the combo for the chicken meat and the liver, so good. The ginger scallion sauce pulls the dish together. There isn't much else on offer here, just the small menu that they focus on. Which is how it should be. We also got extra chicken, photo shows the portion for 3 with $7 of extra chicken.
This place literally has one thing on the menu: Hainanese Chicken Rice, and they do it amazingly. You could smell how fragrant the food is the moment you walk in. The chicken is tender, the liver cooked to perfection (so much so that we ordered an extra serve), and the ginger scallion sauce addictive. It's a very small place with only 3 tables but service is still attentive and efficient.
